About:
Concept: Pillars of Gediminids – one of the historic symbols of the Lithuanian statehood, the symbol that is currently used by the Lithuanian armed forces, also used as the sign of paying tribute to or commemorating national freedom fighters. Thus, the concept of this particular Project is to immortalise fights for freedom by making use of the widely-recognised national symbol. The public space is framed by the pillars of Gediminids – they are “imprinted” on the ground and aim to imply the presence of Gediminas in Vilnius, the latter being h
The Pillars of Gediminids is one of the most important historic signs, widely used in the state heraldry, and one of the most important symbols of the Lithuanian statehood. According to E. Rimša, it is probably one of the most legendary coats of arms. Since 1397 it was the Coat of Arms of Vytautas Magnus and became to be used as the symbol of Gediminids dynasty in the 16th century. The Pillars of Gediminids were used by the Sąjūdis on their emblem. When Lithuania regained its independence, the Pillars of Gediminids became the official sign of the Lithuanian armed forces. The Pillars of Gediminids appear on most of the state and armed forces official decorations, as well as on the freedom fighter certificate.
Materials and implementation. The Project is characterised by a simplified architectural design. The main materials used: cast iron (firm, indelible, alludes to weaponry); the Square is paved in dark stone, with the Pillars of Gediminids in the centre (made of cast iron/stone) with inscriptions of significant dates and texts to commemorate Lithuania’s fights for freedom. The night view: illumination of the contours of the Pillars of Gediminids and the trees growing around the perimeter.
